As an intermediate, α-naphthol is widely used in the synthesis and production of dyes, perfumes, oils, fats, drugs and pesticides. It can be used to synthesize 1,4-naphthoquinone which is an important chemical intermediate, mainly used as raw material for the synthesis of dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, bactericides, rubber, photosensitive materials, organic pigments, thermal recording materials and other fine chemical products. It can also be used as a polymerization regulator for synthetic rubber and resin. It can be used to produce α-methoxynaphthalene which is mainly used as film developer, insecticide and perfume in soap. It can be used to prepare the antihypertensive drug Naftopidil which is a selective antagonist of α1 receptor, can inhibit the increase of blood pressure caused by the α1 receptor, and also has the antagonistic effect of calcium ions. The long duration of blood pressure reduction does not cause reflexive tachycardia. Alpha-naphthol can also be used to detect sugar content in water.
